Salem Township is a quiet, rural municipality located along the Susquehanna River in southwestern Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Home to roughly 4,000 residents, the township beautifully blends its deeply rooted agricultural identity with a rapidly growing footprint in the energy and tech infrastructure sectors. Its history began in 1786 when it was established as one of the original 11 townships in Luzerne County. It was settled primarily by colonists from Connecticut, who named the area after Salem, Connecticut, and survived the intense land-grant disputes of the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. Early development centered heavily around mills, blacksmiths, and highly prized shad-fishing operations along the riverbanks. Geographically, Salem covers approximately 30 square miles, bounded by the Susquehanna River to its east and south. The local landscape splits dramatically between the thick forests of Lee Mountain to the north and the flatter, fertile valleys running through the central and southern areas. Unincorporated, tight-knit residential and farming communities like Beach Haven and East Berwick shape local life, while U.S. Route 11 serves as the primary transportation artery cutting t...hrough the region. Students here attend schools within the Berwick Area School District, and municipal business is managed by a three-member Board of Supervisors from the township building on Bomboy Lane. While traditionally recognized as a peaceful bedroom community, Salem Township is fast becoming a pivotal center for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The area is situated adjacent to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station nuclear power facility, which provides a massive supply of direct, carbon-free electricity. This unique resource attracted Amazon Web Services, which established an early footprint to harness the nuclear energy. More recently, a group of local landowners finalized a historic 1,700-acre land sale to Blackstone-owned QTS Data Centers, launching a multi-facility tech campus project that is set to permanently reshape the township's economic future.
